Giving range attacks a range. in Wesnoth, you can only attack units next to you; with melee and range attacks. So I thought "Hey, why do you attack with range attacks if you're standing right next to a unit, wouldn't it make more sense if you could attack with a range attack from more than one field space between the units?"
